Press for ‘Whistleblower’ (Single)

“The new track by post punk, post-riot grrrl trio, Boise Idaho based Blood Lemon is immediately enticing and so satisfying for a myriad of reasons. Sonically, it is a stunning sounding track and the commanding musicality stands on thick tom tom beats and even thicker guitars creating this stalking deeply lush yet raw atmosphere. When bassist, Melanie Radford's vocal aesthetic, that feels both brooding but self aware and so declarative, floats on top of it all I had a sense of bands or an amalgam of bands like The Breeders, PJ Harvey and Gothic Tropic (for whatever reason). I am really, really loving this and the vocal performance is stunning, captivating. The musical breaks are so exquisitely heavy and when it gives way to a single bass line and amps up with simple perfect lead lines, the slow build, with layered harmonies in tow, portend more punk goodness. The sideways, back and forth tones is amazing and the fact that the song has political, societal hooks makes it even better.”

"Blood Lemon have blessed us with new single ‘Whistleblower’ and it might only be the second single I’ve had the pleasure of hearing from the Idaho trio but they are firmly in the running as one of my favourite new finds of 2021. This track centres around a raw and searing guitar sound which is soothed only by the haunting vocals to create a sound that starts out like Veruca Salt, Belly, Throwing Muses or Breeders but soon spirals off like the Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz into something altogether more unsettling. I haven’t looked if there is a genre attached to Blood Lemon, nor have I tried to pigeon hole them myself but if you like bands that can rock but also aren’t afraid to veer off the beaten path then you’ve come to the right place.”

“‘Whistleblower’ is the brand new single out last week from Blood Lemon’s forthcoming self-titled debut, due out 4/23. The loose groove showcases the more melodic side of the group, adding to previous singles ‘Black Capped Cry’, which matches an eco-lament with band’s blood and thunder, and the kinetic charge of ‘Burned’, that gives way to a soaring coda.”
